Wagh Bakri Premium Masala Chai
Wagh Bakri is one of the three largest and most beloved tea brands in India — the tea Indian families actually drink every morning. Their Premium Masala Chai is pre-blended with the traditional spice mix, so you can make real stovetop chai in 5 minutes without sourcing whole cardamom pods or fresh ginger.
Why Wagh Bakri
India's favorite. Wagh Bakri has been blending tea in Ahmedabad since 1919. Their masala chai is what millions of Indians drink daily. It's authenticity in a tea bag — not an Americanized interpretation.
The right base tea. Strong CTC Assam — "crush, tear, curl" — which is the traditional base for Indian chai. Malty, bold, and strong enough to stand up to boiling with milk and spices.
Authentic spice blend. Cardamom (the signature note), ginger (the warming bite), cinnamon, clove, and black pepper. No fennel, no star anise — this is the classic North Indian masala profile, not a fancified fusion.
Consistent. Every cup tastes the same. That's the benefit of a major Indian brand versus small-batch artisan blends — reliability.
Flavor profile
- Cardamom-forward — the dominant note, floral and aromatic
- Warming ginger bite — moderate, not overwhelming
- Cinnamon and clove — background warmth
- Black pepper finish — the traditional subtle heat
- Strong, malty Assam base — rich body that holds up to milk
How to brew authentic masala chai
This is the stovetop method. Don't microwave it. 8 minutes total.
For 2 cups:
- 2 Wagh Bakri Premium Masala Chai bags (or 2 tsp of loose)
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup whole or 2% milk
- 2-3 tsp sugar
- Optional: 1 extra smashed cardamom pod for extra floral kick
Method:
- Bring water to a boil. Add tea bags. Simmer 2 minutes.
- Add milk and sugar. Simmer 3 minutes — do not boil hard (milk will scorch).
- Strain into cups. Serve hot.

About Indian chai culture
In India, chai is not a product — it's a ritual. Chai-wallahs (street vendors) serve it in small clay cups. Families drink it with breakfast and again at 4 p.m. Every household has a slightly different spice blend handed down through generations. Wagh Bakri's premium masala chai is the closest thing in the US to an "average authentic Indian cup" — a solid default that represents the tradition without any particular regional variation.
