Vahdam Darjeeling First Flush
Darjeeling is called the champagne of teas, and first flush is the most prized harvest of the year — tender, floral leaves picked in March and April as the Himalayan plants wake up from winter dormancy. Vahdam sources this tea directly from the estate gardens in Darjeeling and ships it within weeks of harvest.
What makes first flush Darjeeling special
Darjeeling sits at 6,000+ feet in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal, on the border of Nepal and Bhutan. The altitude, cool mist, and distinct soil create a tea that tastes nothing like the strong Assam blends most Americans associate with "black tea."
First flush (spring harvest) yields the most delicate expression:
- Light, pale-amber liquor
- Floral and fresh-grass notes
- The signature "muscatel" aroma (like the grape variety)
- Low tannins, almost no astringency
- A clean, crisp finish
If you've only had grocery-store black tea and found it harsh or bitter, first flush Darjeeling is a different experience entirely — closer to an oolong or a light green tea in subtlety.
Why Vahdam
Direct from India. Vahdam sources directly from tea gardens in Darjeeling (and Assam, Nilgiri, Kashmir), cutting out 3-4 layers of middlemen. The tea is fresher and the producers get a larger share of the revenue.
Estate transparency. Vahdam publishes the garden names on many of their packages — you can actually trace where your tea was grown.
Certifications. Rainforest Alliance, USDA Organic (on organic SKUs), and ethical trade certifications.
Consistent availability. First flush is a seasonal product; Vahdam's scale means you can usually find it on Amazon Prime year-round.
Flavor profile
- Floral and bright — honeysuckle, jasmine, fresh-cut flowers
- Muscatel — the signature Darjeeling note, like ripe muscatel grapes
- Fresh-grass freshness — hallmark of first flush
- Soft amber liquor — lighter-colored than most black teas
- Zero astringency — unlike Assam or Ceylon, Darjeeling first flush doesn't grab your tongue
How to brew
Darjeeling is not a stovetop chai tea. It's a delicate single-origin meant to be steeped cleanly.
Hot brewing:
- 1 tsp loose leaves (or 1 bag) per 8 oz cup
- Water at 195°F / 90°C (slightly below boiling)
- Steep 3 minutes — longer and it turns astringent
- No milk or sugar (seriously — it wastes the tea)
Cold brew:
- 2 tbsp per 4 cups cold water
- Refrigerate 6-8 hours
- Cleanest possible cold-brew black tea experience
Second flush (summer harvest) has more body and chocolate notes — if you like this first flush, try Vahdam's second flush too.
What NOT to do
Don't add milk. First flush Darjeeling is far too delicate. Milk turns it into weak-tasting beige water.
Don't oversteep. Over 4 minutes and bitterness creeps in.
Don't boil the water. Full boiling water kills the floral aromatics.
Don't use it for chai. Assam or CTC blends are the right base for chai. Darjeeling is for sipping.
Caffeine and health
- Caffeine: ~35-45mg per 8 oz cup (lighter than Assam, similar to green tea)
- Zero calories, zero sugar when served plain
- Theaflavins — antioxidants specific to oxidized black teas
- L-theanine — the calm-focus amino acid found in all true teas
