Numi Organic Emperor's Pu-erh
Pu-erh is the most misunderstood tea in the American market. Most people have never tried it. Those who have often encountered a cheap loose-leaf version that tasted like wet compost and wrote off the whole category. That's a shame, because real pu-erh — aged, fermented, complex — is one of the most rewarding teas in the world.
Numi's Emperor's Pu-erh is the ideal first encounter. It's aged, it's USDA Organic, it's Fair Trade, and critically: it's in tea bag format. You don't need a gaiwan or kung fu tea skills to experience it.
What is pu-erh?
Pu-erh (pronounced poo-air) is a fermented tea from Yunnan province in southwestern China. Unlike green, black, or oolong teas, pu-erh undergoes a microbial fermentation process — similar in principle to how wine or cheese ages — that develops flavors over months or years.
Two main types:
- Sheng (raw) — fermented slowly over years, sometimes decades. Complex, earthy, sometimes funky.
- Shou (ripe) — a modern wet-pile fermentation process invented in the 1970s that mimics aged sheng in months. Smooth, earthy, more approachable.
Numi's Emperor's Pu-erh is a ripe (shou) style — smoother and more accessible for Western palates than a hardcore aged sheng.
Flavor profile
- Earthy depth — forest floor, damp wood, mushroom (in the good way)
- Malty and full-bodied — thicker mouthfeel than most black teas
- Natural sweetness — a hint of sweetness emerges after the initial earthy notes
- Clean finish — no lingering astringency once you're used to the flavor
- Caffeine presence — moderate, comparable to a strong black tea
If you like dark coffees, red wines, or aged cheeses, pu-erh is likely your tea.
How to brew
In a tea bag: just steep 4-5 minutes in boiling water (212°F). Pu-erh handles and benefits from fully boiling water.
Pro tip — the "rinse": in traditional Chinese pu-erh preparation, the first 10-15 second steep is discarded. It "wakes up" the tea and removes any dust. Do a quick rinse, dump, then steep normally.
Multi-steep: a single tea bag can handle 3-4 infusions. Each one is slightly different.
Health benefits
Pu-erh has been studied for several potential benefits:
- May support healthy cholesterol levels — several studies have looked at this
- Prebiotic effects — the fermentation creates compounds that may support gut health
- Contains theaflavins and catechins — antioxidants
These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. Pu-erh is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
